|Famous Fishing - Southern England
The chalk streams of southern England are well known as the cradle of modern fly fishing. The reason why these rivers have always enthralled the fly fisher is not so well understood – it is due to the nerve-tingling excitement of casting at large, wary trout in crystal clear water!
We are called Famous Fishing for a reason. The only waters we deal in are the finest trout fly fishing streams in the world, rivers most people never even get to see, let alone fish – the spring fed chalkstreams of Southern England that are fly fishing’s historic home.
Because we specialize in chalkstream flyfishing, we have been able to access the best privately owned water in England, including stretches of the Test, Itchen, Kennet, Avon and most of their tributaries. The most famous chalkstream flyfishing in the world.
The artificial dry fly and nymph came to be developed here in the 19th Century, and although modern technology has improved our equipment, the methods and tactics we use today are essentially the same. Feeding trout are individually stalked with an imitative fly cast delicately and accurately upstream. You will rarely catch a chalk stream trout by accident – each one presents a unique sporting challenge.
Single days for individuals and small groups
Rivers are usually divided into beats, each fished by a fixed number of rods, typically between one and four. When you buy a day's fishing, the beat becomes exclusively yours, and you are unlikely to see anyone outside your immediate group all day, giving you total privacy. Some beats may be fished unguided, but on others a guide is required as part of our arrangement with the owner of the water.
Single days for larger fishing parties
Famous Fishing has negotiated access to some stunning private estates on the Test and Avon, enabling larger groups of six to twenty to fish together on as much as 4 miles of lightly-fished water. With premium equipment, superb riverside hospitality and professional instruction available, these days have become a favourite way to entertain friends or business associates.
We have fishing suitable for all levels of experience and can provide the best equipment, qualified guides, delicious lunches and a full range of accommodation. Or you can just buy a river beat and fish unguided if you prefer. Whatever your exact requirements, we always take the greatest care to ensure you have an enjoyable day.
At Famous Fishing we like to look after you. Whether you have lunch beside the river, in a fishing lodge or in a manor house, you can be sure the food will be freshly prepared with the freshest ingredients, and accompanied by the finest wines.
In all the establishments we recommend you can expect a warm welcome, superb food, and comfortable beds. Traditional inns, country house hotels, or private houses are conveniently located for your fishing.
The Lainston House Hotel is a charming 17th Century country house standing elegantly in 63 acres of beautiful Hampshire parkland. As you sweep into the courtyard, delicate archways and loggias frame the picture perfect entrance and a small amble reveals a beautiful 12th Century chapel ruin and pretty dovecote.

This unique combination of countryside and coast makes for the ideal location for exploring. This is assuming you can pull yourself away from the multitude of activities on offer within the 130 acres of the hotel grounds of course!
