Poronui Ranch-New Zealand
Poronui Ranch-New Zealand

New Zealand. It's one of the most intriguing and beautiful corners of the world. With a population of about 3 million people, spread sparsely over two islands in the South Pacific, there are fewer people there than in many American cities. Poronui Ranch is nestled in the Taharua valley south-east of Taupo on New Zealand's spectacular north island. It has a rich and colorful history.

The ranch is one of New Zealand's most historic high country properties. The landscape here is as varied as the sky is big. Rivers drain cold water through mountain forests of beech, fern and damp lichen. They descend and amble through flatlands of Manuka bush, native grasses and foxgloves on the valley floor.

Fishermen come to test their wits and skills against the large and notoriously astute brown and rainbow trout. They do it in a wilderness: uncrowded, undiscovered and unbelievably beautiful. The Ranch hosts a helicopter charter service which flies into otherwise inaccessible areas. This quick and flexible access to waterways on the ranch, and nearby, mean you will never fish the same spot twice.

The Taharua and Mohaka rivers pass through the ranch itself, and guests have exclusive access to fishing these areas. The legendary Ngaruroro and Rangitikei Rivers and many more remote and smaller streams, are only a short and spectacular helicopter flight away. Whether your choose to wade in shallow, gentle streams, or tackle the very physical demands of an alpine river, there is water on the ranch to suit you. Our team of expert guides know the area like the back of their hands. They are a colorful crowd of born fishermen who are ready to share the tricks they have picked up over years of fishing in the area.

The lodgehas only five exclusive guest suites. Designed with luxury, comfort and angler's needs in mind, the modern wooden cabins sit only a stone's throw from the water's edge and offer guests comfort and relaxation in a magnificent landscape setting. The lodge is famed for its hearty gourmet food and wonderful cellar of fine New Zealand wines. It is here that you will find a roast dinner like no other. From the lodge itself, you can watch the Taharua flow through the valley and have a great view of the evening hatch. A huge log fire, the finest books and company to inspire you, and the comfort of a big chair and glass of wine are all part of a typically relaxing Poronui evening.

Other Activities.Though famed for the fishing activities, there's so much more to Poronui Ranch. You cannot be other than inspired, relaxed and revived by such beautiful countryside and environment. The ranch is covered with tracks, roads and walking paths which will help you explore the property up close. We have excellent facilities for mountain biking, hiking, horse riding and rafting. The sheer size of Poronui Ranch gives rise to an amazing diversity of landscape settings. The Spar Road winds up through beech forest onto one of the highest points on the ranch, from where there views in every direction are breathtaking.
