|Stonefly Lodge - Nelson, SI, New Zealand
Fly Fishing in the Nelson region of New Zealand is world renowned for spectacular trout fishing locations. Fishing to visible trout using dry flies or nymphs is an exhilarating form of fly fishing.
Centrally located between three of New Zealand's major National Parks, (Abel Tasman, Nelson Lakes and Kahurangi National Park) Stonefly Lodge offers access to world class brown trout rivers, spectacular New Zealand scenery and wilderness activities, all within an hours drive from the Lodge.
This region repeatedly records the most sunshine hours of all of New Zealand, combined with the crystal clear waters and dozens of rivers and streams to choose from, the fishing experience offered from Stonefly Fishing Lodge can be most memorable. Average catch size of brown trout in this region is approx 3lb-4lb, with catches of 6lb plus quite common and the chance of a trophy 10lb brown trout may only be a cast away.
Stonefly Fishing Lodge is ideally located only a few kilometres from the eastern boundary of Kahurangi National Park. The Karamea, Roaring Lion, Crow and Mohikinui Rivers are just some of the world renown rivers in this National Park which offer the fisherman a chance to catch a trophy fish (catches of 6lb brown trout and above are common) Your helicopter departs from, and returns to, our own exclusive helipad just in front of the Lodge on the banks of the Motueka River. Your guide will have all the necessary safety gear, lunch and snacks required for the day's adventure. Viewing the spectacular scenery by air on the way into these remote locations is an integral part of the enjoyment of the Heli-Fishing experience. Scenery made famous by the "Lord of the Rings " trilogy (Middle Earth) can be viewed in this region.
Stonefly Fishing Lodge can be a base for many different fly fishing experiences and we can offer two and three day excursions with a guide to some spectacular remote locations in high country waters in the region which involve overnight accommodation in DOC (Department of Conservation) Huts. All sleeping gear, safety gear and meals are catered for.
Currently under construction, and due to open in October 2009 Stonefly Lodge will be the newest accommodation in Nelson. Perfect for that weekend getaway or private function.
Architecturally designed and engineered, the Lodge is being built from natural stone and timber acquired from the 150 acre property. The Lodge interior focuses on the large stone double sided fireplace which provides the ambiance to the games room, dining room and sunroom. The location for the Lodge was chosen not only because of the unique river setting but because of its central position in relation to the main attractions of the wider region which are the three major National Parks - Abel Tasman National Park (coastal), Nelson Lakes National Park (alpine), and Kahurangi National Park (wilderness)and the 23 boutique wineries of the Nelson's region, which are all privately owned and within an hours drive of the Lodge.
