Calaveras River Guided Fishing

Calaveras River Guided Fishing

The Calaveras River has been a well kept secret for valley anglers in-the-know for decades. Although it begins at about 5000 ft. in the Sierras, it's the tail-water stretch flowing from the base of New Hogan Reservoir that we focus on. The native Rainbows in this stretch are among some of the purest strains found anywhere! With a very gentle stretch immediately below the dam, to a steep canyon downstream, we can match the water to your physical demands. Not being navigable, this is a walk-in only stream. If it's solitude you're looking for, we can show you the access points. At only about 30 miles east of Stockton, this gorgeous fishery is right in our backyards!

Spring

The river is closed from March 31st until the last Sat. in May. This is a Steelhead spawning closure.

Summer

When the river re-opens it’s full on action! The cold flows are very steady and the river fishes well even during mid-day. Pocket water nymphing at it's finest; it's not unusual to catch several trout without moving your feet!

For the dry-fly fisherman, evenings are peek times with a flurry of wildly rising fish, just at sunset!

Fall

Thanks to the deep reservoir and bottom released flows, the river remains cold and the action remains hot right through to fall! With shortening days and cooler weather it's a beautiful time to be on-stream.

Winter

This is a favorite time for many regulars. Cool weather for longer hikes and an ever present chance for Steelhead make this a must-do winter destination!
