The Los Roques Archipelago, 80 miles off the coast of Venezuela, is a dynamite Bonefish destination.
The area is an archipelago of 48 small islands forming a natural barrier protecting miles of hard, clear, clean flats and lagoons which are without a question, some of the finest, most exciting waters we have ever seen. Los Roques has been appointed a National Park, thus no new buildings can be constructed on the islands.
The Fishing:
All these flats are easily fished by wading miles of pristine banks and shallows as numerous schools of bonefish pout from eel grass, creating numerous stalk and cast scenarios, each with its own story. Anglers will have no trouble hooking good numbers of sizzling bonefish that run 4 to 8 pounds. Double digit bonefish are common place on these flats. There's the odd tarpon here and there as well as monster barracuda prowling the lagoon. Permit, mackerel and several varieties of snapper are found near the points and drop offs.
Long-line fishermen have been forbidden and other kinds of fishing have been restricted or regulated. As a result, the numbers of fish here have increased steadily, while other types of game fish have emerged into these protected waters - game fish like tarpon as big as 80 and even 100 pounds. It is a beautiful place with amazing beaches, fabulous fishing, and expert captains and guides.
The Accommodations:
Clients visiting Los Roques will stay at Arrecife Lodge. All rooms at this tastefully decorated lodge are equipped with air conditioning, DirecTV and a phone. Meals are a most enjoyable experience, as Arrecife offers superb international cuisine served with European grace, as well as an open bar (domestic rum, beer and a selection of red and white wines for dinner time).
To ensure your comfort, Arrecife has its own backup electric generator that will support both air-conditioning and Arrecife's industrial ice maker in the event of an energy failure.
